چکیده
9 Evolutionary developmental psychology, an emerging subdiscipline of evolutionary approaches to 10 human behavior and cognition, focuses on the adaptive nature of psychological mechanisms built into 11 the brains of juveniles, some of which may serve immediate demands at different stages of 12 development, and some of which serve preparatory roles for maturity. The current article reviews some 13 of the central ideas of evolutionary developmental psychology and investigates how human 14 educability, which is qualitatively different from the learning capacity of other species, is governed by 15 specific adaptations of Homo sapiens’ childhood that serve to orient the young child to his or her 16 cultural environment. Evolutionary developmental psychology, we argue, can be especially 17 informative to educational policy makers who wish to take children’s natural limitations, as well as 18 their intellectual pliability, into account when planning curricula. Child development and evolutionary psychology.
Evolutionary developmental psychology involves the expression of evolved, epigenetic programs, as described by the developmental systems approach, over the course of ontogeny. There have been different selection pressures on organisms at different times in ontogeny, and some characteristics of infants and children were selected in evolution to serve an adaptive function at that time in their li...
متن کاملThe association between grandmaternal investment and early years overweight in the UK.
Previous studies show that in many pre-modern and traditional populations the presence of a grandmother correlates with increased child survival rates, maybe as a result of improved child nutrition. Grandmaternal investment aimed at improving grandchildren's nutritional status in subsistence societies may have different outcomes in contemporary affluent societies. Using the British Millennium C...

متن کاملEvolutionary Educational Psychology: The Disparity Between How Children Want to Learn and How They Are Being Taught
The goals of evolutionary educational psychology include revealing the source of children’s motivational biases toward learning and using those biases as a sound basis for educational studies and reform. In this paper, two evolutionary based lines of research, folk domain theory and Gray’s research on play, are used to explore the difference between how children learned in ancestral hunter-gath...
متن کاملChildren at risk for developmental delay can be recognised by stunting, being underweight, ill health, little maternal schooling or high gravidity.
AIMS To investigate markers of risk status that can be easily monitored in resource-limited settings for the identification of children in need of early developmental intervention. METHODS Eighty-five children in Kilifi, Kenya, aged between 2 and 10 months at recruitment, were involved in a 10-month follow-up. Data on developmental outcome were collected through parental report using a locall...
